Samahang Pilipino

Picture
Samahang Pilipino (SP) was founded in the 1970s to create a space for Pilipinx students at UCLA.  It is one of the 9 Mother Organizations at UCLA and focuses on the access and retention of Pilipinx students.  Samahang Pilipino serves the Pilipinx and Pilipinx American community both on and off campus.  The organization is divided into three entities, with a board space that oversees the direction of the organization.  The three entities include: SPEAR (Samahang Pilipino Education and Retention), SPACE (Samahang Pilipino Advancing Community Empowerment), and SPCN (Samahang Pilipino Cultural Night).  Kabalikat Kore is Samahang Pilipino’s sexuality and gender component that offers a safe space for Ally and Queer identified people.

Get to Know Samahang Pilipino

Samahang Pilipino was founded on a foundation of 5 pillars: SOCIAL, POLITICAL, ACADEMIC, COMMUNITY, and CULTURAL.  The five pillars help guide the direction of Samahang Pilipino and indicate the organization’s core values.  Through its 3 entities and to promote unity amongst its membership, Samahang Pilipino:
  • Maintains and disseminates the cultural heritage of the Philippines and the Pilipinx American experience
  • Is a source of discussion and participation in critical issues that affect the Pilipinx community as well as other underrepresented groups and work in solidarity with them in transforming systems of power
  • Actively promotes social opportunities to build community

Each year, Samahang Pilipino's Board adopts a campaign to promote the values outlined by the Samahang Pilipino Constitution.  The 2019-2020 campaign,  F.O.R.C.E. (Filipinos Organizing to Raise Civic Engagement), aimed to empower students through civic engagement, focusing on the social, political, and academic pillars of Samahang Pilipino.
